CPD Module 4: Introduction to Soil Logging

Who should attend:
This module will target all professionals within the contaminated land industry (ideally 0-4 years experience) completing intrusive soil investigations.

Objective:
The objective of this module is to provide an introduction to soil logging to Australian standards via both theory and practical (hands-on) sessions and provide confidence and calibration to field staff completing intrusive assessments.

At the end of the session your staff should:

  • Gain an understanding of Melbourne lithology and expected soils types.
  • Become familiar with the relevant Australian  guidance documents for soil logging (AS1726:2017)
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of soil logging parameters (e.g. colour, consistency, grain size, moisture, in situ condition, structure) and associated field tests commonly used in the field and laboratory
  • Identify common anthropogenic inclusions, odours, staining

The first half of the session will be held on level 19 at Just Co and the second half will be a hands on practical session at Senversa downstairs

Presenter Bios: 

Temma Carruthers-Taylor, Senversa
Temma Carruthers-Taylor has a background in geology and landscape science and a PhD in soil science. Since 2015, teaching and training within industry and tertiary education has been an ongoing passion. In 2019, she joined the contaminated land consultancy industry as an Environmental Scientist, having worked on a variety of projects in Victoria.

Ray Prosser, Jacobs
Ray has over 20 years’ experience in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Ray has managed many projects, including major road and rail works, and are a specialist in delivering site investigations including multidisciplinary investigations. Ray has worked in a range of sectors and industries for a variety of clients, including local and regional councils, State and Federal government departments, and large multi-nationals.
