Course Content
The description and classification of fill material is an essential skill for contaminated site investigations. This 3 hour workshop will focus on identifying and describing fill material (for example, ash, staining, odorous material or various types of waste) with a practical hands-on component.
It is assumed attendees have a basic understanding of soil description such as that provided in the Soil Science Australia soil logging courses or are familiar with the Unified Soil Classification system (USCS). If attendees don’t have this basic knowledge set, then attendance will provide a basic introduction to how these classifications are applied.
Presenter: Louise Cartwright – Epic Environmental, Principal Environmental Scientist Contaminated Land Auditor Qld/Tas/NT, CPSS-CSAM
A soil scientist by training, Louise is a Principal Scientist and Contaminated Land Auditor at Epic Environmental. She specialises in providing teams with understandings on how contamination impacts the end value of assets including technical insights, program timeframes and sharing lessons learnt. She provides input across a range of contaminated land projects such as PFAS management, Remediation Options Appraisals and baseline soils and groundwater quality. Louise has in-depth knowledge of risk reduction and management of contamination through previous work for a Tier 1 Contractor and has also developed a practical and strong technically understanding of remediation technologies through her role as Technology Review Manager for one of Australia’s leading remediation contractors.
Presenter: Kylie Hailes – WSP CPSS-CSAM
Kylie is a practicing soil scientist and has over 20 years in the private sector (consultant and client-side) using her craft to protect, assess and remediate degraded soil and groundwater. She has proven competencies in project management (Cert IV in Project Management Practice), tender assessment and management, contractor management, development of sampling, analysis and quality programs, reporting, fieldwork techniques, health and safety, analytical techniques, and field and laboratory QA/QC procedures. Kylie gained her CPSS certification in 2017 and her CSAM competency in 2019 and believes that soil science matters, and that earth and soil scientists should be recognised, their skills promoted and accredited, and their skills engaged across all relevant public and private market sectors.
