Synopsis:

The use of micro-fine activated carbon solutions properly applied to the subsurface at two pilot trial sites in Australia holds great promise to remediate PFAS in-situ through adsorption and to prevent its migration. Learnings during these recent feasibility tests have led to a full scale application at one site and scope and costing for full scale at the other:

  • Given the success, increasing the use of this technology to full scale, use at remote locations, within sensitive site settings or sites with deeper groundwater should not be a deterrent for its use.
  • With groundwater injections, “effective delivery of amendment, remains the single most important aspect of successful remediation, particularly given the range of potentially applicable delivery methods and site complexities” (Pac, Baldock J, Brodie B, et al, 2019, p. 75-91) and must be optimized to ensure carbon saturation where intended.
  • Increased resolution and a well-defined Conceptual Site Models are fundamental to remedial methods in general and especially with PFAS, given the low regulatory targets and human health and ecological concerns.
