The Content of Workshop V
Welcome to our workshop on PFAS, where we will address the critical issue of “Deal with it – PFAS interruption vs source elimination; timescales, performance, confidence.” In this session, we will explore strategies outlined in the Stockholm Convention and check the intricacies of pathway interruption and source elimination. We will examine the effectiveness of treatment trains and innovative technologies in achieving these goals, emphasizing the extract-concentrate-destroy approach for both soil and water remediation. Throughout the workshop, we will discuss the varying timescales required for these interventions, evaluating their performance and the level of confidence they instill in environmental protection measures. Join us as we navigate the complex landscape of PFAS management and work towards sustainable solutions for a cleaner future.
The Presenter
Meet Paul Nathanail, our esteemed workshop leader. Paul is the Managing Director of Land Quality Management Ltd., a specialist consultancy. As a Chartered Geologist and Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC), Paul combines consultancy, research, and training in all aspects of risk-based contaminated land management and brownfield redevelopment. He has chaired the UK National Brownfield Forum and the SiLC Register board of directors.
Paul has worked on PFAS investigations, risk assessments and remediation projects in both the UK and Australia. He is the lead author of the forthcoming CIRIA guidance on PFAS in soil and water and co-chairs the NICOLE PFAS working group. He has developed site specific human health screening levels for 19 individual substances and has taught consultants how to derive such levels for their own sites. He has provided independent review of PFAS remediation projects. Paul is keen to help practitioners “speak” PFAS-ese and truly “get” why PFAS behave as they do.
Who should attend?
The workshop is of interest to regulators, industry professionals, developers, consultants, geologists, researchers, and academics to scale up their knowledge by listening to the latest on the crucial understanding of PFAS remediation technologies.
