Join us for an in-depth workshop titled “What are PFAS and how are they grouped?,” where we will explore the complex world of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. This workshop will cover a range of topics including the role of PFAS as surfactants, their classification as supra molecules, and the use of Greek counting in their nomenclature. We will learn about the different types of PFAS, such as PFAA, PFCA, and PFSA, and discuss acid dissociation along with functional groups beyond the common carboxylates and sulfonates. Additionally, we will examine the various branches, isomers, ethers, dimers, and amides that contribute to the diverse chemistry of PFAS. Whether you are a seasoned consultant or new to the field, this workshop will provide valuable insights into the fascinating and complex nature of PFAS.
The Presenter
Meet Paul Nathanail, our esteemed workshop leader. Paul is the Managing Director of Land Quality Management Ltd., a specialist consultancy. As a Chartered Geologist and Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC), Paul combines consultancy, research, and training in all aspects of risk-based contaminated land management and brownfield redevelopment. He has chaired the UK National Brownfield Forum and the SiLC Register board of directors.
Paul has worked on PFAS investigations, risk assessments and remediation projects in both the UK and Australia. He is the lead author of the forthcoming CIRIA guidance on PFAS in soil and water and co-chairs the NICOLE PFAS working group. He has developed site specific human health screening levels for 19 individual substances and has taught consultants how to derive such levels for their own sites. He has provided independent review of PFAS remediation projects. Paul is keen to help practitioners “speak” PFAS-ese and truly “get” why PFAS behave as they do.
Who should attend?
The workshop is of interest to regulators, industry professionals, developers, consultants, geologists, researchers, and academics to scale up their knowledge by listening to the latest on the crucial understanding of PFAS remediation technologies.
