A Conceptual Site Model (CSM) provides the framework for identifying sources of contamination, contaminant migration pathways, receptors and exposure mechanisms. The NEPM highlights that the CSM is not a static report or diagram, but an iterative tool for understanding, guiding, and explaining site conditions and risks. It forms the basis for the linkage between Detailed Site Investigations and site-specific risk assessment. The complexity of the CSM should correspond to the scale and complexity of the known or potential contamination impacts and provide a roadmap to understand how best to identify key data gaps, prioritise additional works and assess risks that may require management or mitigation.
