Dear Members
ACLCA WA has extended an invitation for all State Chapter members to the following online presentation. Please note this is on WA TIME
ACLCA WA September Monthly Member Presentation – hosted by CDM Smith – Online – Wednesday 11th September 2024 12.30 – 1.30pm
The September monthly ACLCA WA meeting will be hosted by CDM Smith and will be a lunchtime online presentation provided by Dr Candan Desem on “Applications of leachability on source apportionment”.
Brief Overview: This talk is focused on presenting and evaluating the different leaching methodologies available by commercial labs and the application of leaching for source apportionment investigations as well as its ability to aid in fate and transport modelling. This talk will also highlight some of the leaching methodologies and their application as presented in the literature to demonstrate the benefits of understanding and applicability of leachability when it comes to contaminant transport mechanisms.
Bio: Dr Candan Desem is a Senior Environmental Scientist/Geochemist at CDM Smith and Lecturer at the University of Melbourne in the School of Geography, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences. Candan has more than twelve years of work experience in Geosciences, having worked in mineral exploration for three years prior to entering the environmental consulting field.
Candan’s expertise is in isotope geochemistry, metal mobilisation and leaching, and laboratory analytical techniques utilising ICP-MS instruments and sampling. This area is the focus of Candan’s research which has included the development of the first Pb isotope regolith map of Australia (in collaboration with Geoscience Australia) to inform the primary sources of Pb across the Australian continent in shallow soils.
Candan has completed numerous detailed site investigations, including soil and groundwater activities in the environmental consulting field. These investigations include specialised assessments utilising her geochemical expertise through the application of isotopic tracing techniques as well as in the assessment of acid forming materials and the subsequent potential for metal mobilisation. Candan has also worked extensively with the design of complex sampling programs and the subsequent selection and application of analytical techniques to provide scientifically robust interpretations.
