Implications of Microplastics on Contaminated Land Management

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Micro-plastics and nano-plastics are increasingly recognised as contaminants of potential concern; however, their implications for the contaminated land industry remain poorly understood. This presentation reviews recent advances in the understanding of microplastic prevalence, quantification techniques, transport mechanisms, preventative measures and remediation options, with a particular focus on soil and groundwater. It also examines key challenges these contaminants present to the industry, including the need to reconsider approaches to sampling, reporting and modelling, with particular emphasis on the behaviour and significance of plastics smaller than 20 μm..
