We are very pleased to confirm our April technical seminar for members will be held on Tuesday 29th April.
“Sustainable Remediation of Aluminium Smelter Waste – A Case Study of Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri Smelter” presented by Kirsty Greenfield (Ramboll)
The Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri (HAKK) Smelter, located in regional New South Wales, operated from 1969 until closure in 2014. Aluminium smelting produces a waste that is a global issue – spent pot lining. This waste is an issue due to highly leachable concentrations of fluoride and cyanide.
In Australia, aluminium smelter waste cannot be disposed off-site. At the HAKK Smelter, spent pot lining was stockpiled on swampy ground within the footprint of the smelter until the mid-1990s. At this time, the unlined stockpile was capped with low permeability clay to limit infiltration of rain and generation of leachate. Purpose-built sheds were then constructed for secure storage of spent pot lining.
At the time of closure in 2014, the capped waste stockpile (CWS) was the main environmental issue and driver for remediation. Ramboll prepared a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) to identify a sustainable remediation option to render the site suitable for industrial redevelopment without the need for on-going management. The selected option was implemented in a demolition and remediation works program completed over the period 2017 to 2024. Remedial works are now complete and the former smelter site is currently undergoing industrial re-development.
Kirsty Greenfield has more than 20 years of experience as an Environmental Consultant working in contaminated land with extensive expertise in soil and groundwater contamination assessments and remediation projects. Kirsty’s focus has been on large-scale industrial facility closure in New South Wales, including the former BHP Billiton Steelworks in Mayfield and associated Kooragang Island Waste Emplacement Facility; the former Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri Smelter in Loxford; and impacted residential land surrounding the former Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter in Boolaroo. Kirsty is a Certified Environmental Practitioner: Site Contamination Specialist (No. SC40104) with the Environment Institute ANZ (EIANZ).
