ACLCA will be holding an Acid Sulphate Soils Workshop on Tuesday 10th June 2025
Who should attend:
The workshop is for contaminated land professionals with little to no acid sulfate soil (ASS) experience.
The workshop will cover:
- An overview of legislation
- What are ASS?
- How are ASS formed?
- An overview of the ASS assessment process, primarily concentrating on preliminary ASS assessment.
At the end of the workshop the attendee will:
- Know when an ASS assessment will be required.
- Be able to identify indicators for the likely presence of ASS.
- Be able to conduct a Desktop ASS Assessment.

Jeff Thrupp, Technical Executive, Contaminated Land Management. WSP Australia
Jeff is an environmental scientist who has 30 years of experience involving ASS and 32 years involving contaminated land. He has conducted ASS investigations on sites throughout coastal Queensland and within Victoria including the Melbourne Metro area and Phillip Island for small scale projects through to large infrastructure projects. The ASS investigations undertaken within Queensland have included preparing sampling plans and field works, reviewing investigation reports, preparing management plans, including larger scale dewatering, for sites ranging from low to high risk. The investigations undertaken within Victoria Metro area include the classification of acid sulfate soil and acid sulfate rock spoil from within twin nine km train tunnels for Melbourne Metro and management options for the Rhyll Wetland.
