ACLCA Qld will be holding the last ACLCA Member Bi-Monthly Networking Meeting for 2026 on Thursday 1st October 2026
The Bi-Monthly Networking Meetings provide an opportunity for presentations workshops and forums on varied topics of interest or currency of legislation within the Contaminated Land Industry. This is a social evening, with a chance for consultants to network.
Presentation 1: “Introduction Natural Source Zone Depletion”.
Presenters: Margaret Duddington, Principal Environmental Consultant WSP & Regina Balough Associate Environmental Consultant WSP
The presentation will provide an introduction to Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD), explaining the underlying principles and mechanisms, its applicability, and the range of available assessment techniques, including their limitations and constraints. This will be followed by a series of brief project case studies highlighting the objectives, key findings, and challenges encountered during implementation.
Margaret is a Principal Environmental Consultant with WSP in Brisbane, bringing more than 20 years of experience in contaminated land management, environmental assessment, and remediation, with a particular focus on the downstream oil and gas sector. She began her career in South Africa before relocating to Australia in 2022. Since then, Margaret has continued to support major fuel, industrial, and infrastructure clients across a broad range of environmental projects. She has a particular interest in Natural Source Zone Depletion (NSZD) as a sustainable remediation approach and presented the findings of an NSZD project at the EcoForum Conference in 2025.
Regina is an Environmental Consultant at WSP with six years of experience working on projects in the oil and gas sector. Driven by a passion for sustainable remediation, she stumbled upon NSZD and has since implemented the approach at four sites. She is dedicated to improving the effectiveness and adoption of NSZD and recently presented her ideas and experiences at the CleanUp Conference in September.
Presentation 2: “Introduction to Groundwater Fate & Transport Modelling”
Presenter: Darren Bennetts, CEO / Principal Hydrogeologist / Environmental Auditor (VIC), BlueSphere Environmental Pty Ltd
The presentation will provide a practical introduction to groundwater fate and transport modelling, explaining how contaminants migrate and attenuate in groundwater systems and when modelling can be used to support risk assessment, site management, and remediation decisions. It will cover the development of robust conceptual site models, key hydrogeological principles, modelling approaches ranging from analytical to numerical methods, data requirements, calibration, uncertainty, and sensitivity analysis. Real-world case studies will be used to demonstrate practical application and illustrate the strengths and limitations of different modelling approaches. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to select, apply, and critically evaluate groundwater fate and transport models in contaminated land investigations.
Darren is a Principal Hydrogeologist at BlueSphere Environmental. He has a PhD in hydrogeology, geochemistry and hydrology, is an EPA Appointed Contaminated Land Auditor in Victoria and recognised as a Suitably Qualified Person in Queensland. He has specialist expertise in relation to contaminated land assessment and management, site remediation, environmental auditing and water resource management. He has particular professional and academic expertise in groundwater and surface water issues and their management.
