ALS invited ACLCA Early Career Professionals (ECPs) to tour their laboratory facilities on the 20th & 25th November 2025
The laboratory tour enlightened ECPs on what happens to environmental samples once they arrive at the lab. The tour took ECPs behind the scenes and shed light on the varying laboratory analysis processes, challenges encountered and what ECPs can do to facilitate a smooth workflow. Above all else, the tour provided a chance for ECPs to ask questions and engage with the team at ALS.
Angelina Betts, IMEMS Environmental. After a big few days—or even a full week—out in the field sampling, all you want to do is get home and relax. When it comes to wrapping up the work, the temptation to simply dump your samples and run is very real. That’s why it was such a refreshing change to pause, take a breath, and chat with the lovely and friendly Jenny and Nathan from the ALS team.
Having worked there longer than they cared to admit, they were able to answer all our questions and share their experiences in a warm and welcoming environment. One of the key take-home messages was the importance of communication—a principle that applies to any relationship, but especially when working with ALS. Whether there’s a big project coming up, a fast turnaround required, or simply a query about minimum sample volumes or bottle types, ALS are there to help with any question, big or small. Once an analysis procedure starts, it can be difficult to stop, so clear communication is essential.
We then headed off for a brisk walk around the site. With renovations underway, it was fascinating to tour the many labs and see where the magic happens. Watching the water sample containers make their way through the huge automated machine—complete with Christmas lights—was truly mesmerizing.
After returning to the meeting room, we spent time chatting with Jenny and Nathan over pizza. The afternoon was insightful, and we gained a great deal from the experience. We even received a beaker-shaped cookie to take home! A huge thank-you to Jenny, Nathan, and the ALS team for providing such a worthwhile and enjoyable visit.
